Saline vs. Silicone Implants

Saline implants are made of an outer silicone shell with saline or salt water filling the remainder of the breast implant. Silicone breast implants (also called silicone gel implants, gel breast implants, cohesive gel implants) are made of silicone outer shell with silicone filling the implant.
Advantages of Saline Breast Implants
-The insertion of Saline Breast Implants requires a smaller incision than silicone implants because the saline implants are inserted deflated or empty.
-It is easier to adjust the size of a saline implant, since the breast implants are filled with salt water during the surgery, allowing the volume to be tailored for symmetry.
-Saline breast implants can be used in women of all ages.
Disadvantages of Saline Breast Implants
-Saline Implants do not feel as natural as gel or Silicone breast implants.
-Saline Breast Implants, after inserted, can cause the skin to ripple around the breast.
Advantages of Silicone Breast Implants
-Silicone implants feel more natural.
-Silicone breast implants result in less wrinkling of the skin when compared to saline breast implants.
Disadvantages of Silicone Breast Implants
-Inserting a silicone breast implant requires a larger incision when compared to saline breast implants, because gel implants come pre-filled from the manufacturer.
-Silicone Breast implant volume can not be adjusted during surgery, therefore the exact volume needs to be determined before you are taken to the operating room.
-If a silicone breast implant ruptures it is harder to detect.
