How does laser tattoo removal work?
There have been major advances in tattoo removal technology over the past 5 years. Most novel systems carry what is called picosecond technology, which allows the laser to fire its energy in trillionths of a second. In contrast to conventional tattoo removal technology (nanosecond systems), the newest picosecond lasers do not heat the tissue but break the ink particles by inducing photoacustic or photomechanical damage. These fragmented particles are then consumed by your own immune system, and will be flushed out naturally through your body. The latest technology is gentler, faster and more effective for all types of pigment color.

Depending on the condition being treated, as well as the size of the area, a local anesthesia, regional anesthesia, or light sedation will be used during the treatment. The doctor then perform single or multiple passes at various depths that are agreed upon at the consultation. Depending on the skin type and condition to be treated we can use CO2 or erbium lasers or a combination of both. Immediately after the procedure your doctor will apply a thin film of petroluem jelly or medicated ointment.

Your skin will need time to heal, and could be red and swollen for a while. You might be able to return to light activity and work after about 1-2 weeks depending on the depth of the procedure. Avoid chlorinated water for up to 2 weeks, and strenuous activity such as sports or working out for up to 4 weeks. The timing can vary between patients. However, the doctor will let you know at the follow-up appointments when you can resume certain activities. Your doctor will also let you know when your new skin is ready to apply makeup.

Yes, it can be. However, steps are taken to make you as comfortable as possible with local or regional anesthesia, as well as sedation or the use of nitrous oxide (Pronox).

All of the above can be monitored during follow-up appointments.
