What is intense pulsed light (IPL)?
IPL is a device that emits a visible broad-spectrum of light delivered in a millisecond range. Given its broad spectrum (400 nm-1200 nm) a filter is used to selectively choose treatment for acne (450 nm); vascular blemishes, pink scars and redness (530 nm); brown spots and freckles (570 nm); and even hair removal (650 nm). Of note, we don’t perform hair removal using IPL at Houston Dermatology & Plastic Surgery in Katy.
You will have a previous consultation before your procedure to confirm that you are a candidate for the treatment. Ethnic skin types (Mediterranean, Asian, Hispanic and African) are not ideal candidates for some of the types of wavelengths as there are higher chances of being burned or injured by the device.
Type of numbing: topical
Level of pain: mild to moderate
Areas that can be treated: scalp, face, neck, chest, forearms, hands and legs
Special aftercare: Daily use of mineral sunscreen is recommended for the following month after the procedure
