FAQ
What are dark spots?
Dark spots, similar to hyperpigmentation, are areas of increased pigmentation on the skin. Dark spots are generally flat and can range in color from red to brown, depending on the individual’s skin tone and the stage of healing.
What is a chemical peel?
Chemical peels remove the topmost layer of skin cells from the skin surface, which is why peels are an ideal solution for treating dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Chemical peels can also be extremely useful in managing or controlling acne, as well as shrinking the size of enlarged pores.
How do sunscreens work?
Sunscreen ingredients work in two ways: scattering and/or absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation to help stop it from reaching the skin.
How should I apply sunscreen?
Sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before exposure to UV in order to create the intended protective barrier. It should be applied liberally and evenly to clean and dry skin.
For an adult, the recommended application is 5mL (approximately one teaspoon) for each arm, leg, body front, body back and face (including neck and ears). That equates to a total of 35mL (approximately seven teaspoons) for a full body application.
Sunscreen should always be reapplied at least every two hours, irrespective of the water resistance of the sunscreen. Swimming, sport, sweating and towel drying can reduce the effectiveness of the product, so sunscreen should always be reapplied after these activities.
Is sunscreen enough protection?
Sunscreen should never be used as the only line of defence against sun damage. It is also important to remember that sunburn is caused by UV radiation, which is not related to temperature. Whenever the UV Index is 3 or above, be sure to:
*Slip on some sun-protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible. This offers the best protection.
*Slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30 (or higher) sunscreen.
*Slap on a hat – broad brim or legionnaire style to protect your face, head, neck and ears.
*Seek shade.
*Slide on some sunglasses
What is combination skin?
Refers to the type of skin that is both oily and dry. This skin type is usually caused due to environmental toxins, physical stress, and hormonal fluctuations. Women with combination skin usually have an oily area on the nose, chin and forehead, also known as the T-zone. The rest of their face including their cheeks and jaw tend to dry up easily. This means that you have to specially build a skincare regime that suits both the concerns.

Step 1: Deep cleansing
Step 2: Use a serum to hydrate your skin
Step 3: Apply a moisturizer
Step 4: Protect your skin from sun exposure
What is deep cleansing?
Cleansing is an essential step in the skincare routine for combination skin in summer. It is important to choose the right cleanser that is gentle on your dry areas of the skin and effective enough to remove dirt and grime from the oily parts of your skin. Look for a foam or a gel-based face wash that can help unclog pores and reduce oiliness from your skin. At Houston Dermatology Plastic Surgery we offer a variety of skin cleansers that eliminates dirt, dust and grime from your combination skin with ease.
Can I use a serum to hydrate your skin?
Using a serum is the next step in the summer skincare routine for combination skin. They are lightweight, fast absorbing liquids that contain active ingredients that target specific skin concerns. Choose a serum that has a non-greasy formula and absorbs into the skin quickly. It can be Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C. At Houston Dermatology Plastic Surgery we offer this two excellent products.
Do I need to use moisturizer during summer time?
Even though its summer season, you cannot skip using a moisturizer. Considering your skin has dry areas, it’s vital to lock in enough moisture to avoid any skin concerns. It is often challenging to find a moisturizer that suits both skin types. You can mix and match moisturizers by using a lightweight moisturizer on your oily areas and a thicker cream on your dry areas. Alternately, you can also use a lightweight moisturizer that suits both skin types and avoid using a lot on your oily areas. At Houston Dermatology Plastic Surgery we offer variety of moisturizers.
