Liposuction

Liposuction in Sugar Land, Katy, and Houston, Texas

Liposuction is performed in our outpatient surgical center usually under general anesthesia. Surgery length will vary depending on number of body areas of liposuction you are having performed. After anesthesia is initiated, your surgeon will make small incisions in the areas where you are having liposuction, and will infuse fluid containing local anesthetic and adrenaline in order to reduce the amount of bleeding during surgery. Next, a liposuction cannula, a small hollow cylinder with openings, will be inserted through the incisions to loosen the fat deposits. The cannula will be moved back and forth in a fluid motion to allow for the fat to be broken up. The fat is then suctioned out of the body. The fat is removed through this method whether you are having liposuction on your abdomen, thighs, arms, or chin. Fat cells that are removed do not come back, but it is still possible to gain weight after liposuction as the remaining cells can grow larger. There are other techniques to perform liposuction including power assisted liposuction, ultrasound assisted and laser assisted. Power assisted liposuction (PAL) utilizes a powered cannula devise which vibrates and allows for a more efficient fat breakup and removal. It is a preferred method of liposuction at our surgery center. During fat removal your surgeon constantly monitors your body contour to ensure the best cosmetic result. After your surgeon is satisfied with your new contour, the small skin incisions are closed with absorbable sutures. You are placed into a surgical garment and after short recovery you are discharged home.

Liposuction Consultation and Planning

He or she will listen to your aesthetic concerns and guide you as to which intervention will help achieve your desired goals. You will be asked about your medical history and your surgeon will perform a physical exam. Your surgeon will also go over the procedure and explain any risks.

If you are able, it is important to stop smoking. FAQ

Liposuction And CoolSculpting – What Are the Differences?

Liposuction and CoolSculpting are both used by physicians to help reduce the amount of fat in a person’s body. And, both of these procedures permanently remove the existing targeted fat cells in the areas treated by the physician. Cool Sculpting is a noninvasive way of removal of fat and liposuction is a minimally invasive way of mechanically removing fat cells.

Which procedure is more safe: CoolSculpting or Liposuction?

Both procedures are very safe. However, CoolSculpting is non-invasive and requires no anesthesia or incisions. The less you have to invade the body in any procedure, the safer it becomes. On the other hand, liposuction is considered an minimally invasive surgery, requiring anesthesia and small-less than one centimeter incisions.

How does the CoolSculpting and liposuction procedure differ?

CoolSculpting – This procedure will remove excessive fat cells from under the skin, without surgery. It’s a non-invasive procedure that requires no cutting, stitching, or anesthesia. It uses a special tool that will suck in and cool certain rolls of fat to a freezing temperature. Your body will then naturally rid itself of the frozen injured cells via natural processes. Results are typically noticeable after a few weeks, and the final results within 3 months. Liposuction – Small incisions are required to utilize a narrow and long tool for suction, which vacuums out fat cells, therefore, mechanically removing them from specific areas of the body. Local anesthesia or sedation will be required.

Which procedure is more effective: Coolsculpting or Liposuction?

CoolSculpting has been known to eliminate up to 25% of fat cells in the area where it’s performed. And liposuction is capable of eliminating pounds of fat, while remaining safe. By mechanically removing fat cells in large areas of the body liposuction would be considered more effective. However, with both procedures it will require healthy habits on the patient’s part to avoid fat cells from building back up.

How long does each procedure of Coolsculpting or Liposuction take?

CoolSculpting – One session will normally take less than one hour. Current recommendations is to treat each area two times separated by about one month. There isn’t any necessary downtime or recovery time with CoolSculpting. Liposuction – Normally liposuction only requires one treatment to obtain good results. Depending on the area(s) being treated, the surgery will probably take 1-2 hours. Even though it’s an outpatient surgery and you can return home that day, recovery time will take a few days, with restricted activity for up to 3 weeks. Your surgeon will most likely also have you wear a special compression garment while recovering. Final results can take up to several months to notice, due to initial swelling.

What is the cost difference between liposuction and CoolSculpting?

The price between the two procedures varies on the number of areas treated. Cool sculpting requires measurements to determine the number of areas and size of hand piece necessary to get the results desired, while liposuction is based on time and amount.

What are the side effects for CoolSculpting and liposuction?

The side effects for CoolSculpting are normally less significant than liposuction, because it’s a non-invasive procedure. However, both have some reported side effects. CoolSculpting side effects: At the site of the procedure, you may feel a slight tugging sensation. Slight stinging or aching could occur at the site of the procedure. Temporary redness, bruising, sensitivity, or swelling might also occur. It’s rare, but you could also experience paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, a condition when fat cells expand rather than die and eliminate themselves through the liver. However, it usually can be corrected. Liposuction , while rare, side effects include: Irregular shapes in the skin such as divots or lumps can occur at the site. The skin may become discolored. Fluid might accumulate, which would require draining. You might experience temporary or permanent numbness. An infection might develop.

Who makes a good candidate for CoolSculpting and liposuction?

CoolSculpting is relatively safe for most people. People should avoid CoolSculpting if they have any of the following: Blood disorders Cold agglutinin disease Cryoglobulinemia Paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria Liposuction is relatively safe for most people as well, with the exception of the following: People with heart conditions Anyone with blood clotting disorders Pregnant women For any further questions on which procedure would be best for you, make an appointment for a consultation.
