Breast augmentation (breast enlargement) is a most common plastic surgery breast procedure in which the size of the breast is enhanced with an implant. This can help you feel better in your clothes, improve your cleavage, improve your body image, or improve your breast symmetry or balance. Implants may be placed under the chest muscle (pectoralis muscle) or directly behind the breast tissue. Your surgeon will counsel you on which option is best for you and describe all of the benefits and risks of each option.

Breast Augmentation Consultation and Planning

Your surgeon will listen to your cosmetic goals, review your full medical history, and perform a breast exam and measurements. You may want to bring in a picture of breasts you find pleasing to show your surgeon, however, your surgeon will not be able to guarantee that your breast will look like the once in the picture. Every woman has unique anatomy that will determine ultimate result. Pictures will be taken during your consultation. Your surgeon will then discuss in details options that will help you achieve your desired look and explain any risks associated with procedure.

Implant Choices

Breast Augmentation Procedure Description

Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia in our outpatient surgery center and takes about 1 to 2 hours. Patient go home the same day.

There are several options for skin incision for breast augmentation including lower fold incision, around the nipple and areola or even through the arm pit. Not every patient is a candidate for each of these incision types and your surgeon will help select an incision that is best suited for you and the type of implant selected.

Implant pocket is then created either under the breast tissue and over the muscle or under the chest muscle. Implant sizers are often used and inflated to desired size. Patient is then sat up in surgery to see if the given implant size produces desired breast size and shape. Minor adjustments to be pocket may need to be made. After the sizers are removed, a very thorough sterile technique is followed and the implants are introduced using no touch method with the help of Keller Funnel (devise used for silicone implant placement). Incisions are then closed using all absorbable sutures and either skin glue or bandages are applied. No sutures need to be removed following this procedure.

After a short recovery you are sent home. Patients are asked to bring a comfortable post-operative bra with no underwire to be worn home. The bra helps with positioning of your implants and post-operative comfort.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

You will be scheduled for close follow up with your surgeon to monitor your healing. You will be instructed on breast implant massage and exercises that will begin a couple of days after surgery. You will be sore for about two weeks following your breast augmentation, and most patient are able to return to work in 1 to 2 weeks. Your surgeon will prescribe you oral pain medication that will help to alleviate the pain. If implants are placed under the muscle, muscle relaxants may also be prescribed to assist in reducing the discomfort. It is recommended that patients do not drive while taking their pain medications and are having pain. No heavy lifting more than a gallon of milk should be done for full 6 weeks. Wearing a soft supporting sports bra after your surgery will also help with some discomfort. Bras with underwire should not be worn for one year after the surgery. Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after surgery, but should avoid any bouncing activities, like elliptical training, for at least 4 weeks. Most patient are able to return to all normal activity and exercise at 6 weeks.

Breast Augmentation Results

Your breast will continue to change with time and will achieve their final shape and position approximately 2 months after your surgery.
